Dear Brothers & Sisters,
Bethel have implemented various activities to emphasize the importance of Mission in November. All these activities are meant to remind us that God is continuously doing something new daily through his faithful servants all over the world. While churches must not neglect in partnership with mission organizations with financial support and prayers, it is also important that members of the church to never forget the Great Commission Jesus has commanded. Churches support missionaries financially due to the fact that not everyone feels called to let go of their livelihood and move to a foreign country to spread the gospel. It is much more effective to empower locals to proclaim the gospel with clarity having to spend years to learn the language and culture from scratch. When churches do not explain to new believers or educate members of the church why we financially support mission organizations, many may misunderstand that it is the missionary’s responsibility to do mission work.
Before Jesus was betrayed by Judas, our Lord prayed for his disciples that they may be protected from evil ones as they are being sent out to the world to continue his mission commissioned by His Father in Heaven. Jesus has sanctified himself through living a God-centered lifestyle obedient to the instruction of the Scripture so that his followers may be made holy through his examples (John 17:15-19). His proclamation of God’s Kingdom has come and teaching on repentance usually back up with miracles such as healing the sick, feeding the poor, casting out demons, seek justice and save the oppressed as prove. When members of the church simply come to church to learn about the teachings in the Bible have missed the point of Jesus’ mission here on earth. When members of the church do not do what Jesus did, the church has lost its mission and purpose (John 14:12).
The Christian Church can be summed up as God’s continuous Mission through the work of Jesus Christ to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything Jesus has commanded (Matthew 28:19-20). The word “Go” is not simply sending a few people who have passion to go across the world but rather it is a command to each believers to proclaim what we have heard as we are “going about living everyday”. Each member of the church is called to make disciples whoever God has place in front of us. Most Christians have no problems making the commitment to receive salvation; but to pass the good news of Jesus Christ to others is challenging. Many Christians expressed they are not ready to teach others because they do not know enough while others may have difficulties living out their Christian faith resulting in invalidity of their testimonies.
How should we remain faithful to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ? The first thing each Christian must never forget is our identity in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ saved us from hopelessness so that we may also pass this hope to others. For this reason, our Lord Jesus has also sent us into the world to make an impact in other people’s lives by mimicking Jesus in reaching out to the lost through proclaiming the gospel and perform miracles. I am not saying each of us must perform something supernatural like walking on water. What I am saying is that we must not keep the good news to ourselves. The second thing we must do is to speak truth into people’s lives so that the word of God may transform people’s lives. In the name of Jesus, the word of God can heal people’s heart, mind, and spirit, mend broken relationships, combat sinful desires, free the oppressed, and save people from life’s illusions. When we mimic the way of Jesus; whether we reach out to our family members, relatives, friends, coworkers, or strangers who may be in our life for just 10 minutes; people who experienced Jesus Christ will want to know more about Jesus and gladly join in the spiritual journey. May the Lord empower each of us at Bethel to remain faithful to the Great Commission.
